Farmers Insurance’s Sudden and Strict Roof Age Stipulation Sparks Concerns Among Georgia Homeowners

A recent unexpected move by Farmers Insurance has sparked concern among thousands of homeowners in Georgia. The insurance company sent out a letter titled “Notice of Non-Renewal” to policyholders, warning them that their homeowners’ insurance would be canceled if they couldn’t prove their roofs were less than 15 years old. This sudden and strict stipulation prompted worries and inquiries from policyholders and even Farmers Insurance agents.

The Georgia Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner, John King, took immediate action, stating that such midstream policy changes were illegal. He contacted the company and demanded a resolution within 24 hours. Following the commissioner’s intervention, Farmers Insurance decided not to proceed with their plan to non-renew policies with older roofs, and they began notifying affected customers about this decision.

However, the case remains open, and the department is closely monitoring the situation. Any failure to comply with the decision could result in administrative action against Farmers Insurance, a company with around 36,000 policies in Georgia. Homeowners are urged to stay vigilant, and the commissioner emphasizes the importance of prompt consumer notification to avoid potential sanctions.
