In 2022, claims related to lightning resulted in homeowners insurance payouts reaching nearly $1 billion, as reported by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). This figure marked a decrease from the $1.3 billion recorded in 2021. The Triple-I emphasized the importance of resilience and real-time technology applications in predicting and preventing losses. To raise awareness about the risks lightning poses to life and property, Lightning Safety Awareness Week was observed from June 18 to 24. The number of lightning-related claims increased to 62,189 in 2022, compared to 60,851 in the previous year. Florida recorded the highest number of claims with 5,504, while California had the highest average cost per claim at $36,319. The national average cost per claim amounted to $15,280.

The National Weather Service highlighted the significance of Lightning Safety Awareness Week, which was initiated in 2001 to address the underestimated threat of lightning as a cause of fatalities. Since the campaign’s inception, lightning-related deaths in the United States have dropped from approximately 55 per year to fewer than 30.
